Maintaining Healthy Weights in Kids

Back in the day, the Food Pyramid was the guideline that doctors used for guiding their patients on proper diet recommendations.  Now, the pyramid is a thing of the past but doctors are still in favor of a balanced diet.  Now, their concerns though have shifted to screen time and sugar.  Whitney Worley from Entira Family Clinics explains.

1.    Talking to Kids About Weight

  • Create an environment of support
  • Use words like “unhealthy weight” instead of “obese”
  • Talk about growing into a healthy body

2.    Promote Healthy Weight

  • Recruit family as agents of change
  • Limit screen time
  • Avoid snacking around meals
  • Limit sugary drinks

3.    Use the 5–2–1–0 Strategy

  • 5 fruits & Veggies a day
  • 2 hours of screen time or less per day
  • 1 hour of activity each day
  • 0 sweetened beverages
