Mom Approved Bug Repellents

Here's a fun fact -- Female mosquitos are the biters. Male mosquitos don't even bother. And did you know that female mosquitoes can live for up to 100 days?  If you hate the smell of insect repellant or maybe you just don't want it all over your skin, Twin Cities Live reporter Kelli Hanson has found a few products she says are worth a try and they're safe for kids.

1.    Para'Kito
Para’Kito is a wearable repellent wristband. Each wristband comes with two pellets that are made of an all-essential formula that wards off mosquitos.  Oils like citronella, rosemary, geranium, mint, clove, peppermint and cinnamon oils last up to 15 days.  The pellets contain no Deet, chemicals or alcohol are available as refills for Para’Kito wristbands.
Para’Kito repellents are available at Target, Whole Foods, Walmart, REI, Amazon and www.parakito.com

2.    Ranger Ready Repellents
This spray is Picaridin 20% and protects against ticks, mosquitos & flies. Picaridin is reported to be as effective as Deet without the irritation. Picaridin is a synthetic compound developed in the 1980s to resemble the natural compound piperine, which is found in the group of plants that are used to produce black pepper. Bugs hate it! These fine mist sprays will protect you from bites for up to 12-hours and come in three different scents; Amber, Orange and Night Sky.

3.    Smith & Hawkins Candle
If you hate the smell of Citronella Candles, but like the idea of something simple like a flame to keep bugs away, Kelli suggests the Smith & Hawken Citronella Candle, Dune Grass, from Target. It includes not only the scent of Citronella, but also Bergamot & Basil. This Soy based candle will burn up to 76 hours. Kelli says this candle is perfect inside the house when that patio party also means your door keeps opening and closing. This Citronella Candle is on clearance at Target for as low as $6.

4. Plants
If you’re looking for a more natural way to keep the bugs away, try plants! Kelli found herbs at Pahl’s Market in Apple Valley that repells Mosquitos. Plants like Cat Nip, Basil & Lavender ward off bugs because while most humans enjoy their fragrance, bugs don’t!
