Coffee with Cool People: Matt Birk

Former Minnesota Vikings star and Super Bowl champion Matt Birk is enjoying retirement.  Some people feel a weight lifted after they hang up the cleats.  He feels that too.  Quite literally.  The former lineman has dropped some 75 pounds.  Which is proabably a good thing.  Helps him to get around quicker when he’s chasing after his kids.  The father of eight was more than ready to have a large black coffee when he got together with Twin Cities Live host Steve Patterson at Caribou Coffee in Eagan.

During the course of their conversation, Birk oozed a sort of easy-going energy.  And he needs it.  On top of family duties, the former All-Pro has also taken on extra duties with the NFL.  He was hired back in 2014 as the Director of Football Development by the league he spent 15 seasons playing for.  In addition to that, Birk maintains a busy speaking schedule too.  While he admits his schedule can be a bit busy, he maintains he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Before the conversation was complete, Birk offered three reccomendations.  Book: “Strangers in their Own Land” written by Arlie Russell Hochschild.  It’s about a liberal who embeds herself in a conservative part of the country hoping to learn more about them, or as she puts it, an attempt to climb the empathy wall.  Movie: “The Meg”.  All you need to know here is this is about a massive shark – much bigger than a great white – that, once discovered, becomes a massive threat.  Song: “Lose Yourself” by Eminem.  Birk says it’s the song that instantly makes him feel bulletproof!  He can even rap along to the lyrics, but you’ll have to play the video above to hear it for yourself.

If you have someone that you think we should feature in a future edition of “Coffe with Cool People”, tell us about them here.  If chosen, they’ll get a Twin Cities Live branded Caribou Coffee mug.
