Mindset Makeover

Chances are, you're hearing a lot of people talk about their New Year's Resolutions, their goals, intentions, their word of the year in 2018, you name. A recent study says only 39% of people in their 20's achieve their resolution goals each year. And the older you are - the worse it gets. Only 14% of people in their fifties meet their resolution goals. Life Coach Barb Churchill says you can accomplish any goal with the right mindset.

Why do I have a hard time staying committed to a goal/ why do people give up if they think they’re failing?

Here are a few reasons:

  • We bite off big chunks that aren’t realistic. Essentially, we go from doing nothing to saying we will do everything.
  • We make commitments based on what we think we “should” be doing. We worry too much of what other people are thinking instead of asking ourselves, “what do I really want?”
  • We don’t have the right mindset. We have not made that internal shift.

What steps should we take to make sure our mindset is in alignment with our goals?

  • Notice your thoughts – We don’t spend enough time clearing out our thoughts that aren’t serving us well. We just take what we think as solid truth.

Think of your brain as a house you live in. Would you only clean that house once? No way! It would be filled with garbage, dirty dishes and laundry. Yuck! We need to clean our minds, too, and get rid of thoughts that aren’t productive and don’t get us to where we want to go.

  • Ask Why - Sometimes we set goals and don’t know why we’re setting them. We think we “should” do this or that. To find out if this goal is really what you want to achieve, ask yourself “why” 5 times. Go deep on this and you’ll find your answer. This last “why” can bring forth some emotions and is the real reason you want this. It will keep you motivated.
  • Decide – Every day, before your feet hit the floor, decide that you are going to take action toward your goal. Make that commitment to yourself.

What are the best ways I can practice having a positive mindset toward my goals? (Podcasts, books, journaling, exercise, morning routine etc.)

Set an intention. Who do you want to be? What do you want to do?

Journal daily. Notice successes, no matter how small. Notice opportunities for change, times when you didn’t act in a way that supported your intention. Dissect that. Get curious. It’s not about failure. It’s about making lasting changes in your thoughts and behavior. Create a vision board for your 2018. This encompasses everything you desire for the year. I use all parts of my life: work, relationships, health/fitness, spirituality, financial, etc.

Why is mindset important?

Mindset is everything. Our thoughts drive our emotions. Our emotions dictate how we behave and our behavior determines the results we get in our lives. If we want certain outcomes, we must start with what’s driving everything – our thoughts. Dr. Wayne Dyer – “Change your thoughts. Change your life.”
