In 1976, a small group of parents challenged the state’s policy to close Hastings State Hospital with no transfer of funds. This group, fondly known as the ‘kitchen table coalition’ or ‘NAMI Mommies’ went on to advocate at the state capitol and form the first family support group for Minnesotans who have a loved one with mental illnesses. Now, over 40 years later, NAMI Minnesota reaches over 25,000 people a year through their classes, presentations and support groups across the state while continuing their work for people living with mental illnesses and their families at the Minnesota State Capitol.

The National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) Minnesota champions justice, dignity, and respect for all people affected by mental illnesses. Through education, support, and advocacy we strive to eliminate the pervasive stigma of mental illnesses, effect positive changes in the mental health system, and increase the public and professional understanding of mental illnesses.

NAMI Minnesota’s largest annual event, NAMIWalks Minnesota, will take place Saturday, September 23rd at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis. The event will begin at 11:30 AM with performances and live music, followed by a brief program at 12:30 PM and 5k Walk at 1:00 PM. NAMIWalks Minnesota is a free event open to everyone.
