DIY Your 4th of July

If you save your holiday decorating for Thanksgiving and Christmas, our DIY expert says you’re missing out on a big one -- the 4th of July. And if you're this year's BBQ host, you'd better break out the glue gun. Owner of Upsy-Daisy, Danielle Rode stopped by to help you add some festive flair.

  1. Wood Firecracker Décor

 

 

 

 

  • Supplies:
  • Wood posts, cut into varying lengths
  • Red, white and blue paint
  • Painters tape and star stencils
  • Rope
  • Saw
  • Scissors
  • Paint brush
  • Sand paper (180-220 grit)
  • Gorilla Glue
  • How to make:
  1. Cut your post into 3 varying lengths.
  2. Sand them down to get rid of the rough edges.
  3. Paint all three pieces in white paint.
  4. Use painters tape and star stencils to create stars and stripes and paint with blue or red paint colors.
  5. Drill a hole at the top, put a drop of glue into the hole and insert rope or pipe cleaner into your hole to create a fuse.

  • Supplies:
  • Scrap wood
  • Fabrics/ribbons in red, white and blue
  • Blue and white paint
  • Hot glue gun
  • Sand paper (180-220 grit)
  • rope
  • How to make:
  1. Paint your board blue and let it dry
  2. Use star stencils to paint white paint white stars on the board
  3. Once the board is dry, sand it down to make it look “rustic.”
  4. Cut or tear fabric into 1”’ thick strips
  5. Use a glue gun to glue the strips in alternating colors onto the backside of your board.
  6. Cut the length of the fabric so it hangs to your desired length
  7. Use your rope to hang your flag. You can attach with the hot glue gun, or drill holes and thread/knot the rope through your holes.

 

  1. Upcycle picture frame or window frame into a flag

 

 

 

 

  • Supplies:
  • Old window frame or picture frame – no glass.
  • Chicken wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Staple gun
  • Fabric (red, white and blue)
  • White paint
  • How to make:
  1. Paint your picture frame white
  2. Cut the chicken wire to the size of the frame
  3. Use staple gun to adhere the chicken wire to the backside of the frame
  4. Cut or tear fabric into 1”’ – must be slightly longer as the frame
  5. Weave fabric through the chicken wire to create the blue section and red/white stripes of the flag
  6. Tie of the ends to they do not unravel from the chicken wire
  7. Display on your mantle/shelf, or hang on your wall.

 

  1. Confetti Cannons (for the kids) 

 

 

 

 

  • Supplies:
  • Cardboard roll
  • Balloons
  • Duct tape
  • Craft paper
  • Tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • How to make:
  1. Tie a knot in the bottom of your balloon and snip of the top.
  2. Stretch the top of the balloon over one end of the cardboard roll and secure it with duct tape.
  3. Decorate your roll with craft paper.
  4. Cut tiny pieces of confetti from tissue paper and fill your cannon.
  5. To launch the cannon, pull down on the knotted end of the balloon, aim and let go.
