This month is colorectal cancer awareness month. It's the second leading cause of cancer deaths but it's highly preventable. Dr. Terri Wollan from Entira Family Clinics talks about how you can keep your colon in tip top shape.
1. Colon cancer is preventable if the proper screening is done. Polyps can be found and removed before when they are in a pre-cancerous state and can therefore prevent cancer from forming.
2. The process for cancer screening with colonoscopy is easier than most people think. A simple colon cleanse for 1 to 2 days followed by some relaxing medication at the time of the procedure.
3. Although there are a variety of ways to screen for colon cancer common colonoscopy is the most effective way of actually preventing colon cancer from forming.
4. If you have a family history of colon cancer or have Aetna city that pre-disposes you to: cancer, and you will be screened at five year intervals rather than the usual 10 year intervals in order to find a precancerous polyps in the earliest stages.
