Chai is the word for tea in many parts of the world. There has been a big growth in the popularity of chai. Chai originated in India. It’s a flavored tea beverage made by brewing black tea with a mixture of Indian spices and herbs. Laurie Crowell from Golden Fig shows us how easy it is to make at home.
Fresh Chai Concentrate
4 c water
1/3-1/2 c honey or maple
3-4 inch piece of fresh ginger
3 cinnamon sticks
2 vanilla beans
6 star anise
8 allspice berries
2 tsp cardamom seeds or 3 TB card pods
4 black peppercorns
4 black tea bags
Heat water and sweetener to a boil.
Add in all spices and gently simmer 20-25 minutes.
Remove from heat, add tea bags and let steep 10 min. Remove tea bags and let spices rest in water an hour longer. Strain out spices, store in bottle in fridge. Will be good for 2 months...but I bet it will be gone a lot more quickly!
To make, warm equal parts milk with chai concentrate. Yum!
Steam equal parts good chocolate milk with Chai concentrate! Top with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle if you would like.
Heat up equal parts apple cider and Chai concentrate.
If you feel like being fancy you can put a little cinnamon sugar around the rim of your glass!
Heat equal parts coconut milk or whole milk and Chai concentrate. Stir in 1 tsp coconut oil.
