DIY Dog Accessories

You love your pet and you want to spoil that pup but you don’t want to spend the money doing it.  TCL Craft Star, Alisun Abbott, show us how to create doggie accessories without spending a lot of cash.  She makes a collar out of a Hawaiian shirt, a dog bed out of rugs and raised food and water bowls from tomato cages.

  1. Snazzy Pet Collar

Walk your pet around the lakes with a beach inspired look.  This craft is super cute and super easy as it brings new life into an old Hawaiian linen shirt.

For this project you will need:

  • A Fabric Scissors
  • An Old Collared Shirt
  • (Optional) Fray Check, a liquid product that stops fraying on fabric

Step One: Remove the collar from the shirt.  Most shirts have a natural seam and finished edge were the collar of this shirt meets the body of the shirt, with your scissors, follow this edge and you will have a hemmed seam.

Step Two: (Optional) Add the liquid Fray Check product to edge that was cut from the shirt. Let the collar sit overnight with the solution. This will prolong the shirt to be worn as a fashion collar, and you will have better results after washing.

Step Three: Button the collar around your best friend’s neck.  This collar can be worn over a traditional collar that has leash components.

  1. Rag-Rug Pet Bed

When it comes to pet beds, there are many options as far as size but a limited selection of stylish pet beds. Make a stylish and completely customizable pet bed with washable and reusable materials.

For this project you will need:

  • Two Rugs, Same Size
  • Pillow, Upholstery Foam or Folded Blanket
  • Embroidery Thread
  • Upholstery Needle
  • (Optional) Velcro with Adhesive Back

Step One: Lay the two rugs on top of one another. Sew the edges of three of the sides together, it will look like a giant pocket.

Step Two: Fill the ‘pocket’ with the bed’s lining. You can use an outdated pillow, upholstery foam or a folded blanket.

Step Three:  You can choose to use Velcro to the fourth side of the rug.  The Velcro will let you easily gain access to the inside of the pet bed for washing. You can also choose to sew the fourth side of the pet bed to match the other sides.

  1. Raised Food & Water Bowls

Raised food stations for pets are maybe the equivalent of the raised/ standing desk for humans.  Make your BFF a raised watering-hole to quench their summer thirsts.

For this project you will need:

  • Two Painted Tomato Cages
  • Two Bowls for pet’s water & food
  • Garden Twine
  • Mini Hacksaw

Step One: Place the tomato cages with the circle side down/resting on the floor. Determine how tall you want your pet bowls to be raised by measuring the tomatoes cages. With the hacksaw, cut any extra height from the three tomato cage ‘legs.’

Step Two:  Wrap twine around the base of the tomato cage to add a beachy, bohemian vibe.

Step Three: Add the bowl to the top circular portion of the tomato cage. This is where you will add your pet’s food and water.
