Good Company: Afton Alps
Afton Alps is certainly a popular destination for skiers, but it started on a much smaller scale decades ago. On December 21, 1963, Afton Alps opened. It was thanks to some farmers who saw 300 acres of land as an opportunity to get the community involved in skiing. The first day it was open, 37 people came to visit.
For decades, Afton Alps continued to expand. They added more lifts, more ski instructors and eventually an 18 hole golf course was added in 1988. That was a big move to help showcase what Afton Alps has to offer in the warmer months, too. That goal continues. In the past year, foot golf was also added.
Afton Alps is now owned by Vail Resorts. That means, Afton is part of a bigger family of resorts across the country. However, their focus is still on the small town appeal that Afton is known for. Plus, the move is also now benefiting skiers and snowboarders. Afton offers an epic pass during ski season. It gives unlimited access to the family of resorts.
