Hair Extensions

All the Hollywood starlets have probably had them at one time or another and you can too!  Hair extensions are all the rage in getting that full head of long locks – fast.  But, there are so many kinds and it can be costly.  Jason Deavalon, of Jason Deavalon Salon, an expert on hair extensions, stopped by with a few options that you can take advantage of.

Model Laura is wearing “glue-in extensions (known as tracks)”
--prices range:  between $20-$150 for 6 feet of hair or comes in lengths 10 inches up to 18 inches, cut it in segments and glue in segments to scalp
--Laura’s product: cost 42.99 at Sunny’s Hair and Wigs in Minneapolis
--glue lasts between 2-4 weeks depending on how well you maintain them
--you can wash your hair, no conditioner at scalp
--they lay flater against the head, better disguised than braided in pieces

PRO: low price
CON: doesn’t last long, can be damaging to hair and scalp if not applied correctly

Model Kim is wearing “pony tail piece (track wrapped around hair)”
--can buy it already gathered and clip it to your own hair, or buy it in a long piece and wrap it around your own pony tail
--price range:  $10-$200
--solid pieces cost less than pieces that have color dimension/highlights
--human hair costs more than synthetic
--Kim’s product cost:  cost $49.99 at Sunny’s Hair and Wigs in Minneapolis

Model Rachel is sporting “clip on extensions”
--can buy it with clips already attached or buy clips separately and sew them on
--price range: individual pieces can be as low as $5 up to $100, a whole head $40-$350
--Rachels’ product cost: $32.99 hair/$10 for clips=total $42.99
--can buy just one clip to add color (normal or funky) or for holiday dress up
PRO: price, can take out and put back in
CON: not long lasting

Model Jennifer is wearing “salon extensions”
--price range: approx. $13/strand, whole head 100-250 strands
--lasts up to 4 months
--2-8 hour process depending on the experience of the stylist, Jason can do it quicker than most because he’s been doing it a long time (Jason does them in 2-4 hours)
--Jason uses all European human hair because it holds styles better than others, will match your own hair better than most, curly or straight like your own hair
--can do extensions that are beads and feathers and ribbons too
--if you are concerned about price, you can choose to do a few to give your hair fullness, highlight or to fill out a certain thinning area
--a typical whole head is about 100-200 strands
--takes 2-4 hours to bond
--can do anywhere from 1-200 strands depending on the effect you want, can add for length or fullness or color
PRO: natural look, can last 4 months, can wash and dry with special products
CON: price

Jason says some things to keep in mind about hair extensions:

--There’s a big difference in price and quality between human hair and synthetic hair

--Can curl and cut and color human hair, synthetic you can’t apply heat or color

--can wash and dry extensions done professionally, but want to use special products

--you can’t put a regular conditioner at the scalp because it will loosen the balm

--people with dark hair can add lighter extensions as a highlight instead of doing color

--If you purchase pieces and unsure of the color, you can bring them in to your colorist and they can match them (only with the human hair)
