Body Fat Treatments

MSNBC.com just released a list of the top 10 cities with the most cellulite.  Not one city in Minnesota or Wisconsin made that list.  That’s the good news.  The bad news is that doesn’t mean Minnesota is cellulite free!  We decided to put some body fat treatments to the test to see if they really were successful.  With the help of Uptown Dermatology, Dr. Jaime Davis, we put everything from body wraps to a new type of liposuction to the test.

1) Spirulina Body Wrap – this is a seaweed body mask designed to increase metabolism.  It promises to minimize excess weight and cellulite and leave your body feeling firm and toned.  Spiruline is a super nutrient that provides practically everything a human body needs to thrive.  The cost:  $110 - $130.

Dr. Davis’ opinion is that the benefits of spirulina cannot be delivered through the skin.  The procedure is nice for relaxation but not for fat loss.

2)  Zerona Laser – this is a non-invasive laser treatment that claims to melt fat.  Patient’s can’t consume caffeine and are encouraged to workout during treatments.  The Treatments are every other day for two weeks.  The cost:  $2000 to $3000

Dr. Davis’ opinion is that if it really did melt fat they would have to warn you about some serious diarrhea after each treatment.  The laser is no better than a laser pointer from Office Max.

3)  Pro-lipo Plus Laser Assisted Liposuction – this is a minimally invasive procedure that requires a sterile operating room and local anesthesia.  There is a several day recovery period.  It has minimal risks but there can be bleeding and infection.  The cost:  starts at $2500 depending on the body area.

Dr. Davis’ opinion is that this procedure does work.  It is for healthy normal weight to slightly overweight people with localized deposits of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.
