Best known as Ralphie in the HBO TV series, The Sopranos, actor Joe Pantoliano has been involved in more than 100 film, television and stage credits. From the Goonies to the Matrix and an Emmy for his character in The Sopranos, Joe is an established and acclaimed actor.
After taking up a role in the movie Canvas, where he played the husband of a women dealing with Schizophrenia, Joe found himself coming to terms with his own mental illness. During filming his curiosity grew and he asked the crew if any of them had known anyone suffering from mental illness. An overwhelming 75 percent of the people rose their hands.
Growing up wasn’t easy for the actor, his mother was addicted to pills, he found out at age 12 his father he had grown up with was not actually his father. he struggled with PSTD and addictions of his own and had a close friend commit suicide. Joe felt empathy towards the Canvas characters and remembers not being able to feel love from his wife and kids. An answer to all of this was found in 2007 when he was diagnosed with clinical depression.
Joe’s personal problems are what bring him into town. Joe will be at the screening of his documentary “No Kidding Me Too” tomorrow night at 7p.m. at the Theaters of The Mall of America. The documentary talks about Joe battling his depression and his visit to the troops in Iraq.
